5 Ways to Instantly Refresh Your Wardrobe

5 ways to instantly refresh your wardrobe for Spring

Wearing: Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Pumps from YOOX

The timeless optimism that comes with springtime – the cool sunrise light slivers on the floor, flower clouds billowing across once bleak landscapes, and lively birds, perhaps landing on your hand in Disney princess style – isn’t lost even on us southern hemisphere dwellers. When that time comes around, a well-documented phenomenon occurs among women (and stylish men) all over the world. Like the migration instincts of south-flying swans, an urge takes over to dismiss the fashions and style notions of the year before, and look to a new and improved sartorial identity.

When last year’s wardrobe suddenly feels monotonous, and those impulse purchases in pursuit of a trend turn into unsightly faux pas to be swept to the deepest, darkest corners of the closet, you needn’t start from square one. Here are 5 ways to instantly refresh your wardrobe for spring.

1 Introduce a new statement accessory
Sometimes all you need is one amazing new accessory to give new life to a tired wardrobe. Choose something unique and completely different from what you already have or have even considered wearing – spring is the time to be daring. When it comes to unique pieces that won’t be found elsewhere, I could browse YOOX for hours. A pair of ultra-feminine shoes in a bright colour was exactly the piece I needed to add contrast to my rather tomboy wardrobe. These ruby red velvet Dolce & Gabbana pumps were exactly the thing to inspire a new vibe to my outfits. Below are some other amazing statement accessories I spotted on YOOX that could jumpstart your wardrobe:

2 Create new ways to wear something old
You can instantly refresh your wardrobe simply by wearing existing pieces a little differently. Why not roll down your boyfriend jeans and wear them in a straight leg fit? Try wearing your shirts backward or one shoulder. Your jackets and cardigans can be buttoned all the way and worn as tops. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

3 Layer unexpectedly
In addition to wearing your pieces differently, try some new ways to layer to refresh your wardrobe. Wear your dresses with jeans, layer your camisole over a t-shirt and wear two light-weight jackets together.

4 Personalise your clothes
2016’s love affair with elaborate embroidery and reworked denim will flow on to 2017. By employing a little DIY, you can refresh your wardrobe by recreating these looks. Try creating a stepped hem by cutting an inch or two off the front panel of an old pair of jeans. Pick up some quirky iron on badges and studs from the haberdashery and soup-up your denim jacket.

5 Borrow from the boy
Another way to refresh your wardrobe is to bring a masculine element to your outfits with pieces borrowed from the man in your life. His crisp dress shirts and boxy sweaters will look even better on you. Even his trousers, rolled up over the ankle and belted on the hip, can make the coolest pair of drop crotch pants. Remember to combine oversized and masculine pieces with feminine touches, like skinny jeans or pointed pumps to balance the look.
