8 Ways to Wear Dresses in Winter

Don’t say goodbye to dresses when the temperature drops – here are 8 ways to wear dresses in winter

Whether you’re lamenting the end of summer, or rejoicing in winter layering ops, don’t space bag those dresses just yet. The key to mastering the perfect minimal wardrobe is stocking up on versatile pieces and knowing that a little bit of creativity can make anything work the extra mile. The transformative qualities of a dress from summer to winter cannot be understated. Here are 8 ways to wear dresses in winter.

1 Blazer it

Warm up those shoulders by throwing a blazer over strappy dresses and lacy numbers. Keep the look boxy with an boyfriend blazer, or create an ultra-feminine silhouette by buttoning up, or haphazardly cinching the wast with a belt. As the temperature drops, add chunky scarf and sleek boots, too taste.

2 Coat up

One of my favourite ways to wear dresses in winter is to pair a voluminous dress with an oversized coat, and let that skirt swish as you walk. This is a coy, hiding-a-fantastic-outfit-under-here, kind of look, so the dressier the dress and the slouchier the coat, the better. Being nonchalantly underdressed, flat shoes are, of course, highly recommended.

3 Pull Over

Every dress was made to double-wear as a skirt, without exception, even for the flounciest prom-iest numbers. For another way to wear dresses in winter, just pull over a chunky sweater and your easy cold weather outfit is done-and-done. For best results, start with a midi or maxi dress, and drop the waistline with a sweater that’s extra long.

4 Pull Under

The theory of wardrobe relativity states that: that which can be layered under, can also be layered over. Think strapless dresses layered over shirts, and camisole dresses made winter-appropriate by wearing over a lightweight knit. The looks is absolutely Parisian-chic, so hair deliberately undone and a devil-may-care attitude are compulsory accessories.

5 Go Maxi
The knitted maxi dress is your easy winter pull-on-and-go piece. A slouchy long line knit dress gives a cool hint-of-a-figure silhouette, but if having a more defined waist is a concern, then a crossover style is always classic.

6 The Dress and Pant
Wearing your pants under your dress was perhaps once a gasp worthy and daring act, but believe me, it’s your pocket ace to wear dresses in winter. Break the rules and wear your favourite jeans under a lace camisole, or a pair of leather skinnies under a cocktail dress. Stick to a straight up and down silhouette for a not so prissy, tomboy feel.

7 The Boot
Make your favourite minidress winter ready by paring it with an over the knee boot (the higher the better). To keep the thigh-high boot daywear appropriate, opt for effortless suede over dominatrix patent, and pair them with a dress length that shows a little bit of skin to break up the look.

8 Toughen Up
When in doubt, just add leather. Whether it’s a classic girl-gone-bad biker jacket over a summery maxi dress, or a pair of grungy desert boots with a frilly girly number. The look is effortless chic, and conveniently warm.
